Tax Return Calculator

Estimate a return or balance due using a flat effective tax rate.

What this flat-rate estimate actually calculates

This legacy tool compares tax already paid with a simplified liability based on a rate you choose. It does not apply tax-year-specific rules, tax brackets, filing statuses, or an official return calculation. Its prefilled values are examples, not a statement of an allowed deduction or your correct tax rate.

Modeled taxable amount = max(0, gross income − entered deductions)
Estimated liability = modeled taxable amount × (effective rate ÷ 100)
Balance = tax already paid − estimated liability

A nonnegative balance is labeled an estimated refund; a negative balance is shown as an estimated amount due. This is only the difference within this model, not confirmation that a tax authority owes or will collect that amount.

Worked flat-rate examples

An illustrative overpayment

With $50,000 income, $10,000 entered deductions, a 20% assumed rate, and $9,000 already paid, the modeled taxable amount is $40,000. Liability is $8,000, leaving an estimated $1,000 refund.

The same estimate with less tax paid

Keeping the other figures unchanged but entering $6,000 already paid gives a balance of $6,000 − $8,000 = −$2,000. The result is estimated amount due: $2,000.

Deductions greater than income

With $10,000 income and $12,000 entered deductions, this model floors the taxable amount at zero. That does not validate the deductions or model a loss carryforward, credit, or entitlement to a refund.

Common mistakes and exclusions

A marginal bracket rate is not generally the same as an effective rate applied to all taxable income. The tool does not determine either rate. Do not treat its example deductions as an official allowance or include amounts simply because they can be entered.

The estimate omits progressive brackets, credits, special income treatment, state and local rules, self-employment tax, penalties, and interest. Actual withholding and estimated-payment records also need reconciliation. A zero assumed rate makes modeled liability zero; it does not prove that no tax is due.

Use official filing resources or a qualified tax professional for real returns. For the separate tax-year-specific self-employment planning estimate and IRS explanations, visit the freelancer guide below. This flat-rate tool remains a different model.
